Greetings Storytellers and Happy New Year! Now that we are launching into 2018 and you’ve set some goals for yourself, the question is: How do we actually stick to what we set ourselves to do? And How do we know if we are actually doing what we say?
I’ve been reading the book, Don't Shoot the Dog: The New Art of Teaching and Training, which while about training animals, is an incredible resource on how to use positive and negative reinforcement properly. In regards to training oneself (your goals, remember?), the best thing you can do is track yourself, both time and results. This is why programs like Weight Watchers have people weigh in, you need to see data or your mind will find ways to tell you stories (wink, wink).
So, I spent some time researching apps to help me with this and have started using ATracker, which has allowed me to actually see how much time I am spending in different areas of my life, ex: writing, exercising, working on my forthcoming Online Course, etc. When we can physically see actual numbers, it clues us in to if we are dedicating the amount of time needed to accomplish the goal.
So as we begin the 2018, let’s do goal setting correctly together! Let’s begin by tracking where we are spending our time, and of course the next step will be results tracking. Whether you download ATracker (which is FREE for the basic version, $4.99 for the bells and whistles), use another app, or go old school and just write time started and ended for each activity in a journal, let’s take steps to make 2018 the year where we crush our goals!
